My mother's 50th birthday ball is tonight. As such, I will be out of contact for most/all of today. Normal service (read: my very slow-motion breakdown) will resume hopefully tomorrow. Who can say, really? Not I. Possibly Miss Cleo. We share a birthday.

This is also why my apps aren't in / I seem to have vanished a little. I loathe this part of the year.

It's been a good news, bad news sort of day today.

Bad News: I woke up in a pool of blood.
Good News: Despite waking up on my back, I didn't drown in said blood.

And hey, if you don't like me? You can just swap the words 'good' and 'bad' around, and the post still works! :D

Please don't expect essays underneath this cut - ideas are only just beginning to coalesce! More will come, but these sketches will do for now.

So, as some of you have been made aware of, it is my twenty-third birthday today. Thank you for all of your kind words: no, really it means more to me than I think any of you (well, most of you) can guess. For you see, today has probably been the worst birthday I've had - and that's a whole long line of dysfunctional, aloof, upper-class birthdays. But this one really slathers the icing all over that little cake, because this year my family outdid themselves and forgot about it altogether.

It's not a particularly nice feeling, but I thought for the most part I took it in my stride (read: that is a lie, I was a stupid crying girly boy for much of the evening). Due to my father's sense of humour, I couldn't be totally sure whether or not he was kidding, but the part where he began berating myself for my massive laziness when I asked for a day off from walking the dog began to give the game away. This was further compounded by my mother asking me what I wanted for my birthday last night and having very obviously bought my present today (which, I have to admit, were both things I did want and had been toying with buying for myself anyway). She then returned home to begin shouting that nothing had been done, despite my cleaning and dog-walking. The real icing on the cake, of course, was my selfish, astonishingly self-absorbed sister - who I only ever see these days when she's trying to (successfully) milk our parents for money or objects.

My sister phoned this evening, though not to talk to me. She'd forgotten all about me, since she gets very little out of wishing someone else a good birthday. No, she had rung to tell my mother about the holiday she's on with her boyfriend. Normally, this wouldn't be any different from run-of-the-mill sister I'm used to, but she just picked a particularly stupid day to phone.

In his defence, my father claimed that he "has better things to worry about than whose birthday it is". Which about sums up not only him, but also the rest of my family (especially my sister, the apple of his eye) and generations of our family before him. The idea of him apologising is roughly comparable to the idea of him making out with one of the Jonas Brothers on The View, to give you some idea as to the levels of that particular absurdity.

So, yes. Today has not been very good, tomorrow is hopefully going to be better and honestly, thank you all. Thank you for your thoughts, thank you for your birthday wishes, thank you for your giant chocolate cocks. Thank you for being there to talk nonsense with me when my family just gets a little bit too much for me to handle. Thank you for being on my friends list, and hopefully I'll be saying this to you again on my twenty-fourth. When I'll be living on my own and having a ball.

Pick one or more of my characters and one or more of yours, and I'll tell you something they've always wanted to say to your character but could never bring themselves to say out loud.

I am so bored. That's the only reason I'm posting this - it remains to be seen whether I actually do it.

Hey there, America. If you're looking for political causes to champion, can I point another one out to you?

There's an island nation in Europe that suffers under a collapsing, tyrannical socialist government. Its head of state is an unelected aristocrat struggling to control her outlandish, grasping family. Its head of government is an 'unelected', money-obsessed autocrat who stood unopposed in his bid to seize power against the will of the people. He now refuses to call a general election to legitimise his claim. Its deputy head of government is an unelected newly-created aristocrat who has been forced to resign TWICE BEFORE over his appalling behaviour whilst in office, and yet is now responsible for most of the governmental daily policy-making. Its members of parliament are so mired in corruption that they have been resigning in their droves - allowing the unelected head of government to populate a large section of the Cabinet with similarly unelected peers and cronies. As a result, a large swathe of the executive and legislative branches of this small nation's government has never been legitimately supported by the majority, or even a sizable proportion, of the general population.

As a result, the old moderately right-wing working class who once voted for and supported this ailing socialist behemoth are abandoning ship, as the ruling elite throw in their lot with the middle classes. In desperation, a small minority (for now, at least) are turning to the hard right to try and make themselves feel safer. I can remember (well, not first-hand, but you know what I mean) another country that did something similar in a time of economic crisis.

Perhaps the worst part is that it's all legal. And frankly, it's infuriating - there's no blood running in our streets and maybe there SHOULD be.

"The California Supreme Court is trying to push this issue to the Supreme Court of the United States. If brought up to the SCOTUS, it will more than likely rule in equal marriage's favor because of due process concerns -- the main reason being the bizarre fact that in California any gay couples married before the ban are still legally married, just not anyone married afterwards, and since those couples have filed their federal income taxes already, it would cause all manner of tax problems keeping track of who was married when. If the SCOTUS rules thus, gay marriage bans would be invalidated across the nation, thus leading to nation-wide gay marriage."

Does this make sense to you American types? Because I sure as hell don't get American judicial whatnot on the best of days, and right now my head's in a tizz for reasons that I'll explain in a later post.

I also thought that American legal talk was the most appropriate post on which to use my Mamatron icon.
